Per Mertesacker is yet to agree a new deal at Arsenal, according to a report in the Daily Express.
Yesterday, it was claimed that the defender had signed a new one year deal worth about £70,000 a week at Arsenal but the London Evening Standard says that is not the truth.
The paper claims the defender’s future is still uncertain and no agreement has been reached as regards extending his contract.
The defender’s contract expires at the end of this season and his future was thrown into further doubt after he sustained a knee injury in pre-season.
He is yet to play a single game this season despite returning to first team training a fortnight ago, it was thought that he could be loaned out this month but the London Evening Standard suggests he is likely to remain at the Emirates until at least the end of the season.
Arsene Wenger revealed earlier this month that he intends to offer Mertesacker a new deal but reports believe the boss will wait for the defender to prove his fitness first before extending his contract.
It is unlikely that Mertesacker will walk into Arsenal’s starting xi considering the already strong partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi but I hope Wenger will be able to reach an agreement with him to renew his contract.
His experience and Leadership qualities will be invaluable to us in the next few years. He will also be a quality option off the bench but first he has to prove his fitness and I hope he does.
