Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Leicester City star Riyah Mahrez, according to the Sun via Goal.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Arsenal for sometime and reports now claim the North London club have opened talks with the Premier League Champions over signing the Algerian international.

Arsenal triggered Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy’s release clause on Friday and Wenger is keen to complete a double swoop on the Foxes by signing Mahrez.

It is believed that Mahrez has a release clause in his contract and Wenger was shocked at how low the clause is and would now make a move to sign the winger.

Arsenal are keen on Mahrez as Wenger attempts to strengthen the squad this summer. Mahrez was one of the league’s best performers this season and the midfielder scooped the PFA player of the year award in the process.

Barcelona have also been linked with the Foxes playmaker but it is Wenger who is leading the race to sign the Algerian international.

Mahrez scored 17 goals and had 11 assists this season as he helped his team clinch the league title.

A move for the midfielder could spell the end of either Theo Walcott or Alex Oxlade Chamberlain’s future at the Emirates.
