Arsenal are reportedly leading in the race to sign highly rated Portuguese youngster, Goncalo Guedes, with the possibility of a move for him ahead of Bayern Munich according to reports.
The Daily Express claims that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is confident of securing Guedes’ signature in the January transfer window as the Portuguese is reportedly interested in moving to the English Premier League.
The 17 year old Benfica B player has been on Pep Guardiola radar and is also coveted by the high and mighty of Europe with Borussia Dortmund and Ac Milan also reported to be pursuing him.
Guedes plays as a forward and has made 10 appearances in the youth League with Benfica B, scoring 3 goals. Though yet to make an appearance for the senior side, pundits in Portugal have already seen enough of the wonderkid to dub him “the new Franck Ribery” as a testmanet to his impressive talent and potential. This may explain Pepe Guardiola’s keen interest in signing the youngster, although it is believed that he would prefer a move to the Premier League.
The pursuit is more in Arsenal’s long-term interest, though, as the player would be integrated into the U-18s and U-21s to be tutored and nurtured in the Arsenal way, as part of the exciting generation of Gunners in the class of Dan Crowley and Gedio Zelalem. Crowley has been especially getting Arsenal fans very impatient for him to start training with the first team as he continues to over achieve with the U-21s, having plundered a hat-trick in a 4 – 3 defeat to the Anderlecht U21s in the Next-Gen Champions League. With he and Gedio bossing the midfield, Guedes could be running the show on the flanks with his pace and trickery great assests.
As with another Benfica target in Talsica, Wenger could be pushed to make a move for the youngster, as against continuing to admire from afar. With the likes of Chuba Akpom and Benik Afobe making cases for thier chances in the team next season, there’ll definitely not be any shortage of hot young prospects coming through from the Arsenal academy and Guedes will only had to a brilliant youth team in waiting.
Having missed out on a young Cristiano Ronaldo from a decade ago, Wenger will be keen not to let this chap pass him by, especially with the reviews he’s already gaining with papers like O’Jogo in Portugal. The interest of the likes of Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp is a strong hint to his potential, something not to be taken lightly given both manager’s pedigree for nurturing young talents.
