Arsenal has entered the race for Bayern Munich’s in-demand superstar Xherdan Shaqiri, according to Daily Star.
The 23 year old Swiss International was one of Liverpool’s targets in the summer as they went about the revamp of their team to find replacements for Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers is regarded as a keen admirer of Shaqiri and had made efforts to sign him before the transfer window slammed shut on September 1.
The Liverpool manager is believed to still have it in mind to return to Bayern for Shaqiri in January but he will no more have it his way as the duo from North London have also indicated strong interest in him.
Shaqiri has not had enough time to really bring out all he has in his locker at Munich with Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben still in undisputable red hot form. The Yugoslav-born diminutive forward, who is renowned for his ability to get past players with quick feet and a powerful left foot, was a star of Ottmar Hitfeld’s Switzerland team in the World Cup, starring especially in the 3 – 0 win over Honduras in which he scored what is the first-ever left-footed hat-trick in World Cup history.
A promising wunderkid while at Basel, 10 goals in 50 BundesLiga games over three seasons at the Allianz Arena is not considered commensurate with his potential and it is calculated as coming down to a lack of regular involvement. He has made 10 appearances in all competitions for Bayern this season with just the one goal to show – the 7 – 1 rout against Roma a fortnight ago.
Liverpool had a Tottenham-like mass recruitment this summer with the acquisitions of attacking players like Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Mario Balotelli and Lazar Markovic to add to the other additions made in defence and midfield. They have, however, struggled to replicate the stunning form that brought them to the very strips of the League title last season, save for an infamous slip from Steven Gerrard. While the spurs have somehow learnt lessons from their own massive spree last season, they are looking at giving their team more in attack too, as they have had to rely on relatively unknown youngsters like Ryan Mason and Harry Kane in recent games where the more established ones have failed to deliver.
Shaqiri’s physique and power makes him a good fit for the Premier League as his able to hold off challenges from defenders while being a very fiery prospect for goalkeepers with his usually accurate shots. His energy will be a complement to the vivacity of current Arsenal man of the moment, Alexis Sanchez, which will be a good reason for gooners to keep watch of this space.
