Arsenal has moved first before heavyweight rivals, Real Madrid and Manchester United in the pursuit of highly-rated Brazilian star midfielder, Lucas Silva, with Arsenal offering €15m for the midfielder according to Marca.
The 21 year-old 6ft star has been coveted by many of Europe’s top elites, after a hugely successive season in the just concluded Serie A season in Brasil, helping Cruzeiro to claiming the Championship. With the Brasilian League for the season now concluded, Lucas is looking for a move to take the next step in his career, and there has been no shortage of clubs interested in his services.
Wenger’s long scouting antenna means there’ll hardly be a player available with noticeable talent to escape his talent, and certainly not Lucas Silva. He has reportedly dispatched a team of Arsenal confidants to offer the first handshake to the player and his agents, in anticipation of possible negotiations over a move.
Some reports suggest that the Brazil Under-20 International would more inclined to a move to Real Madrid but the reluctance of the Spanish giants to sign a player midseason could open the door for Wenger to pounce to reasonable effect. Manchester United are also following up the situation but have not moved quickly enough to be considered favoured in the race.
Both English clubs are also locked in another similar battle for another Brasilian hotshot, Gabriel Barbosa. United have not been shy to splash the cash this season, having already let go of as much as £150m over the past summer in the recruitment of the likes of Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, not forgetting the huge loan fee paid to Monaco for Radamel Falcao.
Ed Woodward has boasted that United would still be active in the January window and with focus seemingly on adding more youth in planning for the long-term, we would have our work cut out against the Manchester club.
Wenger has recently been unequivocally full of praise for South American strikers, rating that continent as the most productive when it comes to bringing through the world’s best forwards. Having tried to get Suarez last season, and finally landing Sanchez this summer, he looks to keep up the revolution by adding more stock from the Latin America to his Arsenal, and Lucas could be the latest to join up, with others like Dybala and Talisca still in the works.
