With less than 30 days to go to the opening of the winter transfer window on January 1, the scope of Arsenal’s search for options to strengthen the team continues to be broadening by the day, with 18-year old Brasilian starlet, Gabriel Barbosa, being targeted for a potential switch to England.
The Santos Striker who enjoys comparison with Brasilian superstar, Neymar, is reportedly keen on a career changing move to England according to Express, setting up a potential titanic battle between Arsenal, United and Chelsea.
With his buy-out clause set at £40m, it would indeed be a battle of both bills and board room antics as such players are known to come with such huge reputation and may require the playmaking of one or two top club officials to sway the deal in our favour.
Arsenal Chief Executive, Ivan Gazidis, has repeatedly stated Arsenal’s readiness to compete with the best in the world for the best in the world and with United and Chelsea very notable for their spending power, it would be interesting to see how we match them, especially as we’ve long been in there shadow for a while.
United splashed over £150m over the past summer in the recruitment of the likes of Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, not forgetting the huge loan fee paid to Monaco for Radamel Falcao. Ed Woodward has boasted that United would still be active in the January window and with focus seemingly on adding more youth in planning for the long-term, we would have our work cut out against the Manchester club.
Chelsea already boast an impressive array of brasilian players, with Oscar, Willian and Ramires the most prospering. Surely they won’t give us a free ride just because they already have these three within their ranks.
The player, mostly referred to as Gabriel, comes with same reputation as Neymar, though he has yet to get the attention of the Brasilian National team to such extent as to warrant a call up to the senior Selecao. That wouldn’t imply that his qualities are not there for all to see as it doesn’t take an easy feat to don the much revered Number 10 jersey of a club as big as Santos.
