Arsenal and Manchester United set to do battle for Angelo Ogbonna.
Arsenal are ready to battle Manchester United for the signature of Italian defender according to reports.
The 26 year old defender; Angelo Ogbonna, currently with Juventus has appeared as the latest target for the English rivals who have been on the search for supplements to the gaps and deficiencies in their defences.
While it may be argued that United need him to instantly walk straight into the team in the face of a dearth of defensive options at the moment in the absence of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and, Arsenal January target, Chris Smalling, a case could be made for the Gunners as being in more need of Ogbonna’s services as there is, at present, not a properly reliable alternative to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. Calum Chambers has had to fill in at the right back position in the long-term absence of the injured Mattiue Debuchy and is even set for another role further forward due to injuries to midfielders Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey.
Ogbonna has yet to hold a regular role in the Juventus first team having joined the club in 2013 during the reign of Antonio Conte. He has made 20 Serie A appearances till date, with some games in last season’s Champions League under his belt too. Recognized as a center back, Ogbonna is also able to play on the wings as a full back or a wing back, giving us more options to Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monraeal. With both susceptible to recurring injuries, we should be determined to take the chance to improve that side of our defence. Having failed to replace Thomas Vermaelen (who also played left back occasionally), Ogbonna is available as a player in his mold being younger still.
At 6 ft 3, he also provides an aerial balance for us in the team in defence as well as in attack. There has been the issue of not making maximum use of our set-pieces and though the bulk of the issue resides with the quality of deliveries, there is a glaring limit in the availability of targets, with Koscielny and Mertesacker being the prime targets in the absence of Giroud. Ogbonna will make us more threatening in such situations as he is known to have a keen eye for goal, even as a shooter. He also has the energy that is fitting to a high pressing technique which makes him sometimes to appear as an attacking midfielder.
With a change in the management in the Italian National Team, Ogbonna may be ardently seeking more opportunities to showcase himself to ex-manager Antonio Conte for a more regular place in the Azurri set-up and with the now broken barricade of National team players not having to play in the Serie A, Ogbonna will get his chance to shine at Arsenal as we also stand to benefit from him.
