Defenders are not really available in this window and any slight chance of a top class one being available would keep both Arsenal and United on their toes. However, that won’t be Sergio Ramos as the Madrid star looks set to sign a new deal to further commit himself to the Bernabeu according to the Daily Star.
Rumours of a contact between Ramos’s agent and Wenger, coupled with gossips of disagreement between Perez and the former Sevilla star had led to speculation about his future at Madrid. He also was quoted as expressing a desire to play in the Premier League but all that may not have significant value now as Ancelotti has rubbished any possible exit for him.
“He is a player who is always motivated and focused.” The Real Madrid manager said.
“His importance for the team grows bigger with each day that passes and I don’t think that he’s worried about his contract renewal.”
“That is not my concern nor is it my area of expertise.”
“There are players who wear the same jersey their whole careers. That can be said about Casillas, Cristiano, as well as for Ramos.”
The 28-year old Spaniard is easily one of the best defenders in the World, and has even become more revered since moving from full back to center half, from where he has taken up a more leading role in the Madrid sides of the past few years. Only Iker Casillas has seen won more Madrid Jerseys, amongst the current crop of Galacticos, and with ten years in the capital, Ramos can claim to be one of the leading heads in Ancelotti’s dressing room.
Wenger has said that the caliber of defenders he would have loved to sign are usually not available during this window as clubs tend to hold on to their best and it is a mere understatement to say that the 28-year old World Cup winner is among that select few. He is a leader and a very big goal threat, one who would have walked straight into the Arsenal defence. He would have a great role to play in the Arsenal back-line, especially as a voice of coordination and direction.
Both Wenger and Louis van Gaal have seen their teams picked apart by superior attacking teams, and although Arsenal boast more experience in central defence with Mertesacker and Koscielny, both could do with some good competition. At the moment, it looks more like a Paulista providing that than a Sergio Ramos.
With his increasing preference for the Premier League, perhaps something could still happen in the summer, whether he eventually signs a new deal or not this month.
