Mikel Arteta could be confirmed as Arsenal’s new manager on Monday.
Arteta held talks with Gunners top brass yesterday about taking over from Arsene Wenger.
The Spaniard captained the club for two years before retiring in 2016 and packing his bags for a coaching role under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
But he’s now set to return south to London and take up the top job at the Emirates Stadium.
Starsport understands a board meeting is planned for Monday when his appointment could be ratified.
Talks are planned with Gunners legend Thierry Henry, although Arteta is understood to be well ahead of him in the race to replace Wenger.
Yesterday the Frenchman gave his backing to the Man City coach for the Arsenal role.
He said of the 36-year-old on BeIN Sports: “He has all the qualities to do the job and I’ve seen as well that he is one of the favourites.
“He was a leader, he has a good passion for the game. He knows the club well, he knows what is important.
“I left a lot of experience behind me, people who were with me like Steve Bould.
“Unfortunately some of the other staff left.
“He has been an assistant of Guardiola, so overall I think he has the qualities.
“I don’t want to influence it publicly, because I believe it’s important they make their choice objectively and after that I will support him.”
It’s understood no personal terms have yet been agreed between Arsenal and Arteta, with the coach yet to formally tell Manchester City if he wants to move south.
