According to the Mirror, reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal’s plot to land Cruzeiro’s midfield star, Lucas Silva have been made a bit easier with the withdrawal of Real Madrid from the pursuit.
Madrid have been the Gunners major rival in the race to sign the highly-rated 21-year old defensive midfielder but the powers that be at the Bernabeu are not so keen on making the move for him just yet and that would be the perfect opportunity for Arsenal to pounce and plunder. The Brazilian Serie A club reportedly value Silva at £12m and it doesn’t appear the kind of fee that will cause too much ripples in the Arsenal books when compared to what he will potentially bring into the team.
It’s a no-brainer to make a guess on where a player would go if he was the subject of a battle between a couple of clubs with Madrid as one of them. The Spanish giants have both the history and the financial capability to pursue and procure just about anyone in world football. They have a host of central midfielders within their ranks and even had to let one Brazilian go this season, Casemiro. Arsenal has been linked for a while with their Khedira but with nothing substantial coming off that just yet, a young and positive prospect like Lucas Silva may as well foot the bill for what is required at the Emirates.
Those who have watched him play – and there are a few clips of him on the internet – say he shows strong handling of the ball while being inclined to get into the face of advancing opponents. He is also a very good shooter of the ball, especially having a liking for trying his luck from long distance, and that includes set-pieces. In comparison to the past Brazilians we’ve had in the middle of the park, he is definitely more of Gilberto Silva than of Denilson. A technically gifted player, he has the capacity to sit as a holding midfielder, regardless of his age, as he has the frame to hold his own against advancing opponents. Such is his energy, that he can also make play from the center with an excellence in distributing the ball.
Arsenal have had a rough time with midfielders this season with injuries but it’s been more a problem of quality in as far as defensive midfield in concerned. Francis Coquelin has been exceeding expectations at the moment but it could be in the club’s long term interest to make a signing that comes with some form of profile and a degree of guarantee, something Silva’s records seems to offer, even if he is still largely unproven outside of his home country.
