Reports according to Express suggests Arsenal appear ever closer to landing a first defensive target of this window as Sam Allardyce continues to concede ground on the likelihood of holding on to priced asset, Winston Reid.
In fact, the Irons boss seems to be of the belief that the New Zealander has already established a firm agreement with another club and going by the number of clubs that have been rumoured with potentially acquiring him, it could well be Arsenal.
“From what other people are telling me what’s going on in the world of football makes it difficult to think he’s going to stay here” Big Sam said.
“If he’s not going to sign a contract with us I would think that realistically I find it highly unlikely if it’s not already verbally done somewhere else”.
Reid has turned down an improved deal at Upton Park and looks set to leave when his contract runs out on the 30th of June this year. However, West Ham would not want to lose him for nothing and may settle for a cut-price deal from any willing club this winter.
He has been a standing figure of command in the West Ham rearguard and is no surprise that he had to attract the attention of some bigger clubs. Despite the deep annoyance on Sam’s part on the 26-year old’s refusal to stay on, he’s continued to pick him in the team and there was a solid performance from him in their FA Cup third round clash against Everton.
At just 26, Reid has racked up over a century of Premier League caps for West Ham since his debut in 2010 and certainly knows what the League is all about. Having followed the hammers to the Championship following their relegation in 2011, Reid played his part to see that they came straight back to the top flight at the first time of asking and as such, has the experience of the varying dynamics of English Football.
It’s an awkward situation, this, as we have a need for a defender this winter and having to sign a pre-contract agreement in the view of a summer move would solve our immediate concerns. It will please us more to have him now and maybe set our sights on the class of Hummels, Varane or Howedes in the summer.
Wenger won’t readily tinker with Mertesacker and Koscielny’s partnership in central defence for the remainder of the season when both are fit and will be looking for someone who will be happy to play when one of them is not available. Reid fits that profile and his competitive levels at West Ham give him enough experience to give both a push till the end of the season.
