Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho is reportedly on the radar of Arsene Wenger again.
The Gunners are reportedly in search of a midfielder to boost their side ahead of next season. As the summer draws nearer, it seems the Portugal international is still on Wenger’s wish list.
According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Arsenal sent an official to run the rule over the midfielder ahead of a summer move when Portugal played Bulgaria on Friday as they look to replace Carvalho with any of Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Portuguese midfielder has been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent years. A leg injury last year saw the club cool their interest in the Sporting Lisbon midfielder, but Wenger could return for the player’s services again this summer.
Carvalho has a £33.3m release clause in his contract, a fee which Wenger is reluctant to pay. Wenger has scouted the player on numerous occasions in the past with Friday being the most recent occasion.
In an interview with Portuguese newspaper A Bola last year, the midfielder revealed he’s love for the Premier League and his intentions to move there someday, he said:
‘I prefer not to say, but there is a club with which I’ve always empathised – Arsenal,’ he told A Bola. ‘Because of a player who was I very fond of, in this case I wear the number of him: Thierry Henry, a player with whom I always empathized too. ‘Maybe this is why I look with more attention to the Premier League.’
