With exactly one week to the official opening of the January transfer window, Arsenal manager – Arsene Wenger will be making advanced plans now to securing his targets ahead of transfer business.
But recent reports according to Express has revealed that In-demand West Ham defender, Winston Reid has poured some chill over the links to the Emirates, further limiting the options potentially available to Wenger in the January window.
The 26-year old has been mooted as one of Arsenal’s major targets for the coming transfer period as part of Wenger’s plans to strengthen the quality of our defence. Reid has been one of Sam Allardyce’s stand out men, even if all the attention has been more on Downing, Sakho and co. The Hammers are 4 points above Arsenal in fourth place, and have conceding two goals less than we have, with City and Liverpool amongst the names to have been faced and overcome.
Wenger apparently would want the New Zealand International to bring his defensive composure to the Emirates, if the reports we’ve read over the past couple of months is worth anything, but Reid would not be drawn into speculation and anticipations, just yet.
“It doesn’t really affect me. It is just one of those things that has been going on in the background,” Reid told The Daily Mirror.
“I know where I am and just get on with it and I have always given 100 per cent for this club for as long as I have been here and I will continue to do that.”
“It is not something that bothers me, it is just part of being a footballer and it is no big drama.”
Arsenal defensive frailties become more glaring with every passing game as one make-shift plug is pulled for another, all to the same unbalanced results. Debuchy. Monreal and Chambers have not given us an assurance that we usually have with Koscielny, Mertesacker is on 2012 form.
At just 26, Reid has racked up over a century of Premier League caps for West Ham since his debut in 2010 and certainly knows what the League is all about. Having followed the hammers to the Championship following their relegation in 2011, Reid played his part to see that they came straight back to the top flight at the first time of asking and as such, has the experience of the varying dynamics of English Football.
It is fair to say that Wenger won’t easily tinker with Mertesacker and Koscielny’s partnership in central defence and will probably be looking for someone who will be happy to play when one of them is not available. We either get Hummels to scrap that thought and walk straight into the team, or get someone who will have the patience to let either one of them slip.
Arsene Wenger needs to sign a defender in January and by all indications, he is ready to do so. Top quality, experience, good value for a frugal sum and patience are the qualities he’ll be looking out for and there won’t be many defenders available to him January with all those in one pretty trinket than West Ham’s Winston Reid.
