Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has hailed Arsene Wenger’s decision to play Alexis Sanchez as a centre forward this season.
Wenger surprised many at the beginning of the season by opting for Alexis Sanchez upfront. Some criticized the manager’s move at the time but his decision has been vindicated by Sanchez who has now proving he is more than capable of playing upfront and Campbell believes that particular decision has a big influence in our strong start to the season.
Wenger had relied on Giroud all these years but the French international wasn’t able to deliver on a consistent basis which prompted Wenger to opt for a different player with a different skill set in Sanchez. Campbell has now hailed that decision as a master stroke, suggesting it is key to our fine form.
“Maybe Arsene doesn’t want an out and out centre-forward this year,” the ex-Highbury hero told 888Sport .
“Maybe that’s the key and he wants to mix things up, to have players in the groove. While you’re banging in the goals why go to systems?
“Sometimes it needs someone to look at these guys and allow them to be free and see how long it lasts.”
Sanchez has offered us a different threat upfront than we are used to. The Chilean has added pace to our attack and his ability to run behind defenders is key to our impressive run of form this season.
Although he still has room for improvement, he has proven to be more efficient upfront than he was on the wing in the last two seasons.
