Alexis Sanchez has revealed he always goes home sad whenever Arsene Wenger chooses to rest him.
Sanchez has been one of Arsenal’s key players since he moved to North London in 2014 and has been key to our achievements in the last two years. He is even proving to me more important this season, after Wenger moved him to the centre forward role.
Wenger decided to deploy the Chilean as a centre forward at the beginning of the season due to the attacking crisis we had during the summer and he has adapted perfectly to the role, helping us to one of our finest start to the season in recent years.
Sanchez is a player who expends a lot of energy on the pitch trying to help the club and Wenger revealed in September that one of the reasons he moved the Chilean upfront was to get maximum productivity from his energy.
Footballers do need to rest, there is no player that can go an entire season on the same level of performance, making rest essential to the players. But Sanchez has revealed that he doesn’t like Wenger’s decision to rest him.
He told ESPN Brazil, while on international duty: “He told me to rest, but I don’t like to rest. Neither in the matches.
“I don’t like to be out, I get upset, I go home sad, because I train to play, I rest to play.
“It’s my job and I do everything to perform at 100 per cent.”
It is understandable that the player always want to be on the pitch to help us win games and titles in the long run but inadequate rest causes fatigue and increases susceptibility to injuries which will affect his performances.
I trust Wenger to continue to rest him when necessary and he must get use to it. Sanchez has already scored eight goals and provided seven assists this season.
