Reports making the round suggest Shkodran Mustafi could leave the Emirate Stadium this summer to return to the German Bundesliga.

The German future at Arsenal is currently uncertain, with Arsene Wenger yet to be replaced as manager.

It is likely that the defender will remain at the Emirates Stadium, as he is now the club’s most senior regular centre-half with Laurent Koscielny’s injury and Per Mertsesacker’s retirement.

Mustafi has never played first-team football in the Bundesliga despite earning 20 Germany caps.

“It never happened. At the age of 17, I went to Everton because I always wanted to play in the Premier League,” he told SportBild, as translated by Sport Witness.

“After the three years, I first disappeared from the radar. I never felt that the Bundesliga wanted me.”

Asked by the German publication whether Bundesliga clubs attempted to sign him after the 2014 World Cup, Mustafi replied: “Yes, one or two clubs were spoken with.”

It was believed Mustafi would prefer a move to Valencia when he left Sampdoria, impressing enough in Spain to earn a move to Arsenal.
