Mesut Ozil insists he is ‘proud’ to have played under Arsene Wenger following the long-serving Frenchman’s decision to stand aside Arsenal manager. Wenger confirmed last week that he would bring down the curtain on his incredible 22-year tenure at the end of the current campaign.
Ozil recently committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract in February and cited Wenger’s presence as his decision to sign for Arsenal in a then club-record £42.5million transfer from Real Madrid back in 2013.
Ozil told beIN Sports: ‘Anyone who played for him knows his qualities. ‘We are proud to have had the privilege to work with him and under his guidance.’
Ozil was joined by his German compatriot and club captain Per Mertesaker, who also paid a glowing tribute to the influnce Wenger has had on his own career. Mertesacker said: ‘He’s been the major figure for this club for over 20 years.
‘He’s been so impressive for me and he’s trusted me so much throughout my career, in bringing me here, giving me the opportunity to play here and making me captain even when I was injured.
‘He also gave me a future role here at the club, so I’m very grateful and humbled for the opportunity he gave to me.
It is a sad day for me but we’re also moving forward for the future. ‘It’s in Arsène’s interest as well that this club will give positive memories to the fans and the people.’
