Ex Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone has revealed why he failed to make the grade at the Emirates, via London24.
The goalkeeper spent eight years at the Emirates spanning from 2005 to 2013 but only managed 15 Premier league appearances in his time at the club. The Italian then moved to Sunderland and has experienced a change of fortune as he is now the Black Cats’ first choice goalie.
Speaking in an interview with Gazetta Dello sport, Mannone revealed he had a poor relationship with Arsene Wenger, although the French man never stopped advising him on how to improve as a footballer and that meant a lot to him.
“With Wenger, I didn’t have a great human relationship,” he said. “He never believed in me.”
“But when I played with Sunderland at the Emirates after that fantastic evening at Old Trafford (saved two penalties in Capital One Cup semi final), he said: ‘I have to compliment you, you are a great goalkeeper’. His words were sincere. They made me happy.
