Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires believes Arsenal have found an heir to club legend Dennis Bergkamp in Mesut Ozil.
Ozil has grown in terms of importance to our squad this season and has been more decisive in recent weeks, scoring crucial goals for us.
The German has been our creator-in-chief in the last couple of seasons but his improved goal scoring prowess this season has made him more decisive and Pires believes his current role can be compared to that of Bergkamp’s.
Bergkamp was a Gunner between the 1995 and 2006 playing a key role in our successes during that period. He made over 300 appearances, establishing himself as one of the greatest player in our history and Pires believes Ozil can conveniently fill the Dutchman shoes.
“Something has clicked,” he told Arsenal Player .
“What’s happened in the head is like a click because he’s scored a lot of goals.
“This is a difference between the last season with Mesut Ozil and now because he’s thinking just for himself and sometimes when you are in front of the target it is very important to score a goal.
“Mesut Ozil has very good qualities, he can normally score a minimum of 12 goals during the Premier League so in my time the maestro was Dennis Bergkamp, and now it is Mesut Ozil.
“I love them both because they play very good football but they play for the team. Not for himself, they play for the team. This point is very important for the future and of course for Arsenal .”
Wenger recently claimed all Ozil needs to match Bergkamp’s achievement is to sign a new deal and emulate the Dutchman’s longetivity.
It appears the German international has taken to the boss’ advice as reports claim he is on the verge of signing a new long term deal. Hopefully, Ozil will be able to lead us to many titles just like Bergkamp did.
