Arsenal Legend Paul Merson has criticized Arsene Wenger for his failure to make a move for Manchester United new boy Eric Bailey.
The defender has shown his qualities for the Red Devils and Merson believes Wenger should have rivaled Manchester United for the youngster’s services.
Wenger is currently in the market for a centre half and the French man has been told to pay outrageous prices and Merson belives Bailey for £30m would have been an ideal signing.
“The Man United centre-half looks like a centre-half. You look at Eliaquim Mangala last year and you thought ‘£30m, that was a bit strong!'” he told Sky Sports, according to IbtimesUk.
“But I just look at the Man United lad [Bailly] and I think ‘why haven’t Arsenal gone for him?’
Merson also took a swipe at Wenger, claiming the French boss has failed to sign a quality defender since he joined the club 20 years ago.
“Wenger went to that club [Arsenal] and inherited one of the best back fours of all-time. I’ll give him [Laurent] Koscielny and the other was Sol Campbell who was a no-brainer. Since then you can reel off 20 centre- halves who don’t even make up one player. What’s the problem?! He’s sitting next to one of the best centre-halves Arsenal have had in Steve Bould!”
The club are currently working on a deal to sign a centre back before the end of the transfer window and we would be hoping we get a quality one that would improve the squad considerably.
