Arsene Wenger may elect to retain Per Mertesacker in the starting XI for the trip to Sunderland after the Gunners kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory over West Brom. Gabriel provides the other option in central defence, with Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal seemingly assured to continue in the full-back positions unless Wenger looks to rotate given the short turnaround. Calum Chambers and Kieron Gibbs provide alternative options, although the latter missed Thursday’s victory with a back problem.
After playing 90 minutes against the Baggies, Aaron Ramsey may drop down to the bench, with Francis Coquelin perhaps earning a recall alongside Mohamed Elneny at the base of midfield in the 4-2-3-1 formation.
Jack Wilshere could be able to play some part having featured for the U21s over the last few weeks. Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil look certain starters in the attacking midfield positions, with Alex Iwobi perhaps a candidate to be rested given Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell provide strong back-up options.
Danny Welbeck may be handed a recall up front in place of Olivier Giroud in attack.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains out for the Gunners, whilst Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla remain big doubts after returning to training following injury.
