Arsenal Still Linked To Hummels. Do We Really Need Another CB In The Summer?Arsenal Still Linked To Hummels. Do We Really Need Another CB In The Summer?

Transfer Deadline day did not catch any Arsenal fan by surprise in January as the club had moved quickly before the last week of the window to secure the signing of Brazilian defender Gabriel. Yet, it does appear that the coming summer may still see us following the rumour mill with regards the possible addition of another defender in the person of long-term target, Mats Hummels.

The German super defender has been at the very top of his game in the past two years, earning him an exalted place on the wishlist of every top European club and according to the Express, the Gunners might still be interested in signing him when hostilities resume in the transfer market by July.

The report actually does suppose that the Gunners chances may be slimmer at that time due to the likelihood of North London rivals, Spurs beating Dortmund to the signing of Valencia defender, Shkrodan Mustafi. In effect, the report suggest Borussia Dortmund would have been willing to let go of their captain when they sign the 22-year old former Everton man – Mustafi, and as much as that fails to fall into plan, it is still worth pondering upon if it involves Mats Hummels.

A commanding display in Germany’s World Cup winning campaign last summer, formally established the 26-year old as one of the very best defenders in the world but there are a good number of reasons for Wenger to really ask himself if there is an actual need for Hummels in his team by the summer.

Despite the apparent shortage there had been at the rear guard last summer, there seems to finally be a good number of personnel available with whom Arsenal fans are comfortable with. While Mertesacker and Koscielny remain first choice, new boy Gabriel looked like good value in his debut against Middlesbrough and we have already seen that Calum Chambers is at his best at center-half in the future based on how he had played earlier in the season.

Throwing Hummels into the mix would almost certainly lead to the dormancy/departure of one of these players. Surely neither Gabriel not Chambers as they have only just begun their Arsenal careers and they have shown good ingredients. Koscielny? He is easily one of the League’s best and Bayern and Barcelona have been reportedly told to looks elsewhere. Mertesacker then? He is not exactly your Tony Adams but the BFG’s love for the club has seen him raised as a key figure both on the pitch and in the dressing room and losing that experience would be a wasteful venture.

Yet, Hummels massive qualities demand that any ambitious club should be in the running for him and it could end up biting somewhere below the waistline should rivals like United or City go all out and land him.

Perhaps not, given the names mainly linked to United have been younger stars like Rafael Varane, Marquinhos and Aymeric Laporte. Hummels may be gold at the moment but it seems likely that most clubs in England are thinking about building for the future.

If that be the case, Wenger may stand his ground and resist the temptation. In the four central defenders currently in his squad, he has both the present and the future secured.
