Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has retired from international football to focus on club football.
The 34 year old goalkeeper who was part of the Czech Republic team that traveled to France for the Euro 2016 competition has now decided to quit international football following his team’s elimination from the competition.
The goalkeeper has decided to step down from his national team to enable him get the best out of his remaining club career.
Cech was one of Czech Republic best Sportsman in the last decade and will be a big miss for the Czech’s although a blessing to Arsenal as the goalie would be less distracted from the job at the Emirates.
Cech said : “This is a purely football-based decision. If I want to prolong my career and play at the highest level for as long as I can, then I will probably need to find the balance so that I can continue to do so.
“I’m now 34 and the next [international] tournament is in two years which, in football, is a very long time. The last thing I wanted to do was start a campaign and then say ‘I don’t think it’s right for me to continue’ halfway through it.
“I’ve made fantastic memories and I will keep them. But as I said, you cannot stop time and sometimes you need to make decisions looking to the future. I believe it is the right move.”
Cech was an important part of Arsenal squad last season and his contribution to the team last term cannot be played down. He helped the club finish second on the league table but he is hoping to do better by winning the league next season.
