Arsenal are on the verge of signing their transfer prime target Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to emerging reports.
The Gunners have made the signing of defenders their top priority for the coming season and Papastathopoulos has occupied the top of the target list even before Emery was appointed as the Gunners Coach.
Papastathopoulos has only a year left on his current contract but he has refused to pen a new deal with Borrussia Dortmund in order to seal a move away from the club.
Arsenal head of recruitment is believed to have been working a deal for the 29-year-old Greek centre-back and the Independent have claimed that the Gunners are on the cusp of confirming a £16m deal for the player’s transfer.
The report claimed that Arsenal are looking to close a number of deals before the world cup but they want this to be wrapped up this week. Dortmund had knocked back Arsenal’s £13m bid for the star before the London club decided to meet his £16m asking fee.
Arsenal were let down by Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin and the club has decided to add up four defenders to their squad. Stephan Lichtsteiner of Juventus and Caglar Soyuncu of Freiburg are among the defenders targeted by the Gunners.
When Papastathopoulos is confirmed as a Gunner, he will slot in the Arsenal defense as replacement for the injured Laurent Koscienly.
While we await his confirmation, we think he will be handed the no.5 squad number that was worn by Gabriel Paulista before he left for Valencia. Mertasacker has also hung his boots and he’s left the squad no.4 jersey but we think a high profile midfielder will be handed that number.
