Defensive midfielders have been the most sought after players between Arsenal, United and Chelsea in the run in to the January bustle, with Sami Khedira, Arturo Vidal, William Carvalho and Kevin Strootman mostly stealing the show. Four players of immense quality, yet there will be a fifth, and a real gem that blows them away.
The 26-year old is reportedly keen on swimming in new waters after having spent the entire duration of his career at Barcelona until now according to Express.
At the heart of many things that make the Catalans tick, Sergio has been a mainstay at the Camp Nou, forming the base of a midfield colosseum that included Xavi and Iniesta, a match that has not been established anywhere else. Though he’s been offered a new deal, the feeling is that he wants a fresh adventure, the Premier League being a very likely destination.
Chelsea and United are said to be our potential competitors for the 6ft 2in baller, even if you would want to wonder why Mourinho should be going for another player of Matic’s similar quality. The Serbian has proven to be the actual monster keeping the fort for Chelsea this season, and it is that security that we have lacked with neither Arteta nor Flamini up to it. United even boast a stronger assembly in Daley Blind, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher but won’t baulk from vying for a piece of such a World Class player.
A player with over 70 International caps, close to 200 League appearances and a World Cup title, with a couple of Champions League winners’ medals, it is hard to argue that there are a few out there who could compare with Busquets in the roll of defensive midfielders, and certainly none of the four mentioned above have proven as successful as he has been, neither has any been as consistent.
Wenger has cried out (well, the fans, basically) for an assured player in that position who would do the job for him in keeping the back four covered, and at the same time giving the attackers freedom to move forward without keeping an eye on the rear mirror. It is hard to imagine he is not frustrated with Flamini, especially as Arteta has suffered a set-back in his bid to recover and return to the team. January just seems too far to have to hold on to making do with the Frenchman. Flamini, that is.
We only have to endure one more week before the picture will become clearer on the actual targets Wenger has had in mind to bolster the team. All that remains now is mere speculation.
