Manchester United appear to be on a rampaging kidnap mission on all of Arsenal’s transfer targets, with reports according to Metro that they have made a mega offer to German International Sami Khedira to turn him away from Arsenal’s reach.
Khedira is widely expected to leave the Bernabeu this winter as his contract with the European Champions is set to tip in the summer. Arsenal have made efforts all summer to capture Khedira but disagreements in wages apparently scuppered the deal. The player has fallen from the regular team under Ancelotti, especially this season as Luka Modric and fellow World Cup teammate, Toni Kroos, seem to be the preferred pair in central midfield.
Khedira is thought to be keen on a move away from Spain to keep his career on track, England being his most suited destination. He had reportedly lowered his wage demands to as low as £85,000 a week as a come-and-get-me plea to Arsene Wenger but with Le Prof perhaps unsure of what to expect from Real Madrid in terms of their willingness to let him go, United have taken the initiative to force the issue.
Louis van Gaal has been searching for a strong holding midfielder to serve as a replacement to Michael Carrick as the long-serving ex-spurs man tends to spend more time in the treatment room in recent times. Frustrated from long futile pursuits for the likes of Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman, Van Gaal seems to have turned his attention towards the one player almost certain to be available when the winter window opens in January 1.
In what appears to be a double blow to Arsenal, United want to add to the Khedira swoop, Schalke’s Julian Draxler. The Daily Star reports that Louis van Gaal’s men have been frequenting Gelsenkirchen in a bid to see that they out-bid Arsenal to one of our long term signings, with scouts monitoring the player. Arsenal have long been in the forefront in the pursuit of the highly rated 21 year old World Cup winner, the player himself admitting to an interest from the club over the past 12 months. The reports have it that United are going to pay the £37m set in Draxler’s buy-out clause, perhaps the fee being too large in Wenger’s assessment during negotiations in January this year.
Khedira’s snatch will hurt more as he is one player whose services we are in more need of, with neither Arteta nor Flamini satisfying our need for a defensive midfielder. Whether Wenger will let this slip pass him is yet to be soon. Perhaps, we should be readying a wage package to rival the one from Old Trafford.
