Andrey Onana could be the next Barcelona progidy to make the switch to the Emirates.
Arsenal have been linked with a young player who is set to put Giroud’s popularity under some serious threat.
Reports in the Express reveal that Barcelona youth team goalkeeper Andrey Onana is headed for a January move to the Emirates, after the club have expressed some reluctance in offering him a continued stay at the Camp Nou. The player has been impressive with the La Masia and has supposedly been followed by scouts from Arsenal for a while now, even turning down the chance to make a move last transfer window with the hope of getting more years in Barcelona. The Catalan giants, though, are yet to put any offers on the table for the young Cameroonian after splashing significantly in the summer on two goalkeepers – Claudio Bravo from Levante, and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen from Borussia Monchengladbach – leaving the youngster to seek a career opportunity away from Barcelona.
This has made the Gunners more confident of capturing the 18-year old this January, given that chief scout, Francis Cagigao, who has been Wenger’s eye on the player, has now urged the manager to make a move for the goalkeeping prodigy.
Goalkeeping inconsistencies have been a constant trouble to the Gunners since the departure of Jens Lehmann in 2007. Neither Manuel Almunia nor even current Number 1, Wojeciech Szczezny, has managed to really stamp his authority between the sticks for a long period without significant doubt.
We’ve also seen various back-up goalkeepers mount a contest for the first choice gloves but all have merely flattered to deceive, with the likes of Vito Mannone moving on to Sunderland last season, and last season’g FA Cup goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski joining Swansea City in the summer. The news of the withdrawal of current back-up goalie David Ospina from the Colombian squad for this week’s International friendlies against El Salvador and Canada over the recurrence of thigh concerns have raised questions over his fitness, while Damian Martinez readiness to step up to the big occasion is still not yet ascertained after an indifferent showing in the Emirates Cup this year. It points to the need of a continued search for more options in that position, who can come in and be assuring in the long term.
Arsenal’s long-standing good rapport with Barcelona could see us land another youngster from them, following in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and more recently Hector Bellerin. It will also lay to rest any anticipated breakdown in this friendship as insinuated by some sections of the Catalan Press over the details involved in the transfer of ex-captain Thomas Vermaelen, with the suspicion that the Gunners had intentionally offloaded him to Barcelona in the full knowledge that he was a crock.
And as for the rivalry to Giroud… Well, unless the fans choose not to use the ‘Na Na Naa’ line when drafting chants for Onana (though it’d be more fitting you know).
