Arsène Wenger has revealed the latest team news ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Arsenal play host to League leaders Chelsea in Sundays Premier League’s evening kick-off. And Arsene Wenger has revealed an update on his team ahead of the clash.
When asked of Arsenal’s vice-captain Per Mertesacker and the rest of the squad that played against Reading last week, Wenger said:
“Last week against Reading, Per Mertesacker got injured and he has not been out [training] since. He’s still in the treatment room and I don’t know if he will be available or not. [He is] 50/50 [to start against Chelsea] at the moment. Apart from Mertesacker, everybody else [from last weekend] should be available.”
Wenger also offered update on injured Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain;
“He’s still out, he has not been in training. He’s not being considered at all.”
However, the manager had some good news to share with the return of Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta to full training. Although, he insisted that the 33-year-old is a “bit short physically” to go into the game against Chelsea.
“He’s getting closer. He’s back in full training but is still a bit short physically to go into a game of this intensity.”
Wenger also revealed that new signing Gabriel is prepared to replace Per, should the BFG fail a late fitness test ahead of the match on Sunday.
“He’s ready [to step up]. He came on in the FA Cup semi-final and I think if Per is not ready, Gabriel will start.”
