Arsenal vs Southampton: Player Ratings, MOTM, FOTM.

In the latest episode of the ‘Alexis Rescues Arsenal’ series, who impressed us most as we gasped off with all the spoils against our top four rivals?

Damian Martinez: 6
Three Consecutive Clean Sheets. Assured handling. Can still improve his distribution but is already a fierce competition for Szczesny.

Calum Chambers: 6
Gets better and better with every passing game. Surely the better of the two right backs on show tonight and looks ever more comfortable on the ball. Debuchy’s return will be welcome; he should get some deserved rest now.

Per Mertesacker: 6
Did well to keep Pelle toothless for much of the game, though the big Italian managed to evade him on some occasions. The team’s major leader and keeps a third clean sheet as well.

Laurent Koscielny: 7
So confident a defender that he can chest control in the box even with the world breathing down his shoulder. A truly World Class defender, and yes “we have missed him”.

Nacho Monreal: 5
Has been a better center back this season. Not enough going forward and the inlet for the Saints’ attacks. Thankfully didn’t strain his ankle enough to warrant a potentially unsettling early substitution

Mattiue Flamini: 5
Did nothing more than pass sideways, and his sliding tackles left much to be desired.

Aaron Ramsey: 6
6 too much ehh? Well he was rubbish for much of the FA Cup Final but still had the consciousness and desire to be in the box to score the winner. A good cut back to set up Alexis was good enough to mask another worrying performance.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 5 FOTM
Not much done in the game and was disappointed to have been subbed off for Giroud. maybe could have done better with the shot in the first half

Santi Cazorla: 6
Still a very good game from Santi and continues to thrive in that central role. It will be so good to see him rediscover the purity of his shooting which has been quite lacking in both focus and direction.

Alexis Sanchez: 7
Guilty of the extra unnecessary swivel but was delighted to have Giroud on in the second half. Once again, been at the right place for a simple tap in. What a player!

Danny Welbeck: 6
Can we rely on Welbeck for the whole season? On the evidence of last night, unfortunately No.

Subs
Olivier Giroud: 7 (MOTM)
Denied getting us the victory by Forster’s incredible acrobatics, his presence changed everything and got us the three points.
Lukas Podolski: 6
Made a case for him to be given more playing time, but more as a left wing forward.
