Arsenal have been warned against appointing Mikel Arteta as their new boss by expert Ian McGarry
Claims circled on Friday that Arteta would be joining the Gunners to replace Arsene Wenger and that an announcement was imminent.
The 36-year-old ended his career with the Gunners, retiring in 2016 before taking a role on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City.
And that makes McGarry believe it’s too soon for the Spaniard to get the big job at Arsenal.
He told the Transfer Window podcast: “Some people may see this (mass departures) as a sign a new manager has been agreed, but not announced because a new manager would be the person to say ‘I want everyone cleared out’ or some to stay and some not.
“My information is that is not the case.
“There has been talk about Mikel Arteta. I don’t think that would be the right move for him or for the club because he’s basically just been an apprentice to Pep Guardiola for a year.
“And I don’t think taking on the Arsenal job is the right first step for him because he’s being thrown in at the deep end.”
Arteta’s chances of landing the Arsenal manager’s job were boosted after he received a glowing reference from recently departed boss Wenger.
Wenger has insisted ever since it was announced he would leave the club that he would play no part in appointing his successor, but he had kind words for his former skipper.
