Arsenal will make Konstantinos Mavropanos their first signing of the January transfer window – and immediately send him out on loan.
Reports emerged from Greece on Wednesday morning that the Gunners were in advanced talks to sign the 20-year-old centre-back, who currently plays for PAS Giannina.
And Arsene Wenger confirmed the deal was imminent, when quizzed on signing Mavropanos following Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea
“Yes,” said the Arsenal boss, when asked whether Mavropanos would be his first signing of the transfer window.
“But he’s not ready to play for us. We will give him out on loan.”
Arsenal have agreed to pay around £1.8 million for the defender, who has spent the past few days in England and undergone a medical.
Mavropanos is a player who has been identified by Arsenal’s new chief scout Sven Mislintat, who arrived from Germany in December.
It’s not the first time Mislintat has raided the the Greek market, he signed Argiris Kampetsis for previous club Borussia Dortmund from Olympiakos last summer
It is expected Mavropanos will move on loan to Germany for the second half of the season, with Werder Bremen a potential destination.
