Arsene Wenger has revealed why he decided to sign Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez in the final days of the transfer window.
The duo were late arrivals and many believe they were signed as a result of Wenger’s desperation to strengthen the squad.
Arsenal spent almost the whole summer trying to sign players like Lacazette and Vardy but Wenger finally turned to Perez after failing to lure other targets.
Mustafi was Wenger’s top target to strengthen the defence but the deal wasn’t an easy one to complete, the boss was reportedly reluctant to spend big on the defender but was forced to do so in the final days of the transfer window also brining in Perez in a rather late double signing. A move which has significantly increased the Gunners odds of wining the Premier League title this season.
Wenger while speaking to Arsenal Player, has equally backed the duo to be successful at the Emirates, claiming they bring proven quality to the squad.
“They bring us qualities. Mustafi is a young centre back and already has international experience.
“Lucas is an interesting striker who is versatile, can play on the flank and especially though the middle. He can score goals and can also provide a good number of assists. With the way I like to play, that’s an interesting quality.
“I would say it’s the most mature squad I’ve had for a long time, because they are men. They are not 19 or 20 years old, they are 24, 27, 28 and the whole squad is quite mature.
“It’s the first time for a long time that I’ve had a team of what you can call men ready to compete. After, we have to show that we are good enough to beat everybody else.”
Mustafi and Perez made their debut against Southampton on Saturday helping the club to a 2-1 victory over the Saints.
