Reports indicated that Atletico Madrid Saul Niguez had his bag packed , ready to complete a transfer to Arsenal this January, according to reports in Spain. However, it now seems the 21-year-old’s move to the Emirates Stadium may be off with Diego Simeone losing key midfielder Tiago to injury.
The 21 year old is now viewed as an important member of the squad in Tiago’s absence and he is now getting enough playing time in the team, something that wasn’t available to Saul prior to Tiago’s injury.
According to Spanish outlet El- Confidencial; the news of Saul unable to link up with the gunners would come as a blow to Arsenal who has been looking for replacement for the injured Francis Coquelin. The Gunners have been linked to Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, Southampton Victor Wanyama, FC Porto’s Reuben Neves and Bayer Leverkusen player Lars Bender as a potential replacement for Coquelin.
The Gunners have a lengthy list of midfield players out injured; Francis Coquelin, Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Santi Carzola. Saul would have been a valuable addition to the Gunners in their bid to win the Premier League title this season after a 11 year wait.
