Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez believes Pep Guardiola could make a move for Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere in the summer transfer window.
The City boss has been a big fan of Wilshere since he put up a brilliant display against Barcelona in 2011.
Wilshere’s future is currently up in the air as his Arsenal contract expires at the end of next season and Wenger is yet to offer him a new contract.
Manchester City are reportedly keeping close tabs on the midfielder’s situation in view to making a summer bid and Xavi believes Guardiola could make a move sign the England international if the opportunity arises.
The former Barcelona midfielder revealed that his former boss has “a lot of respect” for Wilshere and wouldn’t be surprised if he attempts to lure him to the Etihad.
“I know Pep has always had a lot of respect for Wilshere – he impressed so many of the Barcelona team when we played Arsenal in 2011,” he said, as quoted by the Belfast Telegraph.
“He impressed me a lot, I know he also did Pep, and he’s a player that he would have been following ever since.
“We have talked about him, it was not a performance you forget easily. Technically he is the sort of player that Pep loves – his only problem has been injuries – and if it wasn’t for injuries I am sure he would be one of the best midfield players in the world.
“If there is a chance to sign him in the summer, I am sure Pep will give it real consideration.”
Arsenal are expected to offer Wilshere a new contract when he returns to the Emirates at the end of the season. The midfielder is also expected to commit his future here which should put an end to Guardiola’s hopes of signing him.
