Arsenal have made their move to sign Lyon captain Nabil Fekir after the Frenchman’s agent opened the door to a summer transfer, according to reports.
The 24-year-old’s agent conceded that Fekir wants to play for ‘a top 10 club in Europe’, while Arsene Wenger is a long-time fan of a player who has scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 this season.
And now Spanish publication Sport report that Arsenal have launched a bid of €50 million (£44m) to sign Fekir after taking his agent’s words as encouragement to bid.
Wenger still intends to take charge of Arsenal next season and is looking to sign players who can leave behind a legacy after he has left, with Fekir an ideal fit.
The Gunners are also keen to wrap up a deal before the World Cup when Fekir’s price could rise, even though he was left out of Didier Deschamps most recent squad for friendlies against Colombia and Russia.
Fekir’s agent, Jean-Pierre Bernes, intimated that Fekir would be open to leaving Lyon this summer and would discuss any offers with the club’s president. Bernes told Le Dauphine Libere:
‘If at the end of the season, and this is not the case today, there was a decision to be made, then we would sit down with President Aulas and we would find the right solution.
‘Respecting first and foremost Olympique Lyonnais. At home, we do not leave like a savage or after a showdown. Nabil is in a big French club if not the biggest.
‘You know very well that at some point, we may be able to ask questions about a departure. The decision will be taken in all intelligence, as professionals, and especially in the interests of all parties.
‘When you leave your training club, to whom we owe everything, we leave in good conditions. If we have to leave…’
