Arsene Wenger will now turn his attention to signing Riyad Mahrez, after failing with bid for Thomas Lemar.
Wenger wants to complete the signing of French star winger Lemar before the club’s pre-season.
Arsenal tabled a £40m bid for the Monaco star last week but the French club are playing hardball.
Lemar is believed to be the priority but it is his transfer that is proving to be more difficult as Monaco have given Arsenal little encouragement about signing the playmaker.
According to The Express, Wenger will now turn his attention to Mahrez as an alternative to Lemar.
The Leicester City winger is reportedly willing to join Arsenal and would be a more realistic target.
Mahrez was crucial to Leicester City winning the Premier League title two seasons ago and has since then been on Arsenal’s radar.
The Algerian would also be a relatively cheaper option, considering he would be available for around £30m – the same amount which was rejected by Monaco for Lemar.
Mahrez wouldn’t be a bad signing at all but I don’t expect his signing to affect our pursuit of Lemar.
The Monaco man is seen as a replacement for Sanchez, meaning his pursuit will be dependent on whether the Chilean stays or not. Mahrez should come in regardless of what happens with Lemar.
