Arsenal are considering a move for former Manchester United defender Johnny Evans, according to reports.
Wenger realized the club needs to strengthen its defense after last season’s performances and has been working actively to sign a centre back this summer.
The French boss has now been made to step up his efforts after losing Per Mertesacker to injury. The club have looked to sign Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi in the last few days but it appears it is keeping it’s options open by keeping tabs on other targets.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are considering a surprise swoop for Evans.
Wenger is now considering signing the defender and is prepared to offer as much as £16m for his services.
The defender joined West Brom from Manchester United last summer. Wenger is a big admirer of the 28 year old and tried to sign him while he was at Manchester United but the Old Trafford club refused to sell to a direct rival.
Evans’ injury record could be a source of concern for Arsenal fans as the defender struggled with injuries in his time at Manchester United. Although, he was ever present for West Brom last season featuring in 45 games for the Baggies.
