Kieran Gibbs is refusing to take a pay-cut to join Watford, according to a report in Tribal Football.

The defender is finding it difficult to secure a move away from the Emirates despite the club already telling him he is free to find a new club.

The club’s price tag and the player’s salary demands are proving to be a stumbling block.

Watford are keen on signing the defender and have been in talks with Arsenal for weeks but yesterday, it was claimed the Hornets have pulled out of the race to sign the defender because of Arsenal £16m valuation.

However, the Mirror are claiming Watford were confident of negotiating a lesser fee with Arsenal for the defender but it is the player’s demand that is holding up the move.

Gibbs currently earns £80,000 weekly and he is demanding the same figure before completing a move away from Arsenal.

Should Gibbs refuse to shift ground, he would have to see out the final year of his contract at the Emirates and then leave for free next summer.

While the defender leaving for free will be a huge loss on Arsenal’s part financially, it will mean him wasting a full year of his career because there is no way he can be reintegrated back into the squad.

He was left out of the club’s preseason squad and is currently behind Kolasinac, Monreal and even Chamberlain in Wenger’s pecking order.

It is actually surprising that Gibbs is holding out for so much for money rather than concentrating on getting his career back on track after spending the last two years on Arsenal’s bench. Football nowadays is all about the money.
