Former Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch has backed Arsene Wenger to decide when he will leave the job.
Pressure has been mounting on Wenger because Arsenal sit sixth in the Premier League table and are 13 points outside of the Champions League places.
Supporters want the Frenchman’s 22-year reign to be terminated at the end of the season but Rioch has leaped to the boss’ defence.
Wenger replaced Rioch as Gunners manager in 1996 but now the Scot wants his predecessor to leave the club on his own terms.
“Arsene Wenger has earned the right to leave Arsenal Football Club when he feels that it is the right time to call it a day,” Rioch told the Sun.
“He has been such a great ambassador for the club that he surely deserves the right to make the decision to leave his own decision.
“Arsene has done magnificently well for the Arsenal and, for me, he will most certainly leave with his head held high.
“I thought I was going to get a longer run for my money because I’d signed a three-year contract.
“The team was then in the throes of a re-build and that was continued when Arsene came in — and they have played unbelievable football during his reign.
“Not just for Arsenal but also for the game of football as a whole in England — and that should never be forgotten.
“He is a very proud man and has had a lot to shout about because his teams down the years have played very exciting football.
“And they have the honours to go with the attacking football that has got so many fans off their seats.”
