Wenger had reportedly identified the German midfielder as one of the numerous options to improve the midfield ahead of next season but he is set to be disappointed with BVB’s plans to renew the midfielder’s contract, via the Daily Express.
Although it isn’t yet known if the midfielder will be interested in extending his current deal at the German club but BVB chief has revealed that they are preparing to offer him a bumper new deal in order to ward off interest from the Gunners and other suitors.
Dortmund’s chief executive Hanz Joachim Watzke revealed that despite serious interest in the midfielder from a number of top club across Europe, there are plans to tie the midfielder to a new deal.
“I don’t know if Ilkay will leave this summer. Ilkay is a very important player for us,” Watzke said.
“But to be at Borussia is a special thing. We are in the best 10 clubs in Europe and to go to another club is a risk. We want to give him a longer contract.
“We will see what his decision is. But we are very relaxed about this.”
