Santi Cazorla says he is happy with the way Arsene Wenger improved the midfield in the last two transfer windows.

Prior to this year’s January transfer window, Arsenal’s midfield was the position that needed the most attention and was obviously the weakest position in our squad.

One year after, it is arguably the strongest part of our squad and Cazorla has hailed the work Wenger did to strengthen that position in the last two transfer windows.

Cazorla says the signing of Mohammed Elneny and Granit Xhaka have added quality to our midfield, in turn making it easy for him to perform well.

The Spaniard who played primarily as an attacking midfielder until he was shifted to a deeper role to accommodate Mesut Ozil eighteen months ago, impressed many with the way he has performed in the new role. Cazorla has now revealed the secret to his seamless adaptation, claiming Xhaka, Elneny and Coquelin all played a crucial role in his settling into the position.

“There are two things,” Cazorla told Arsenal’s official website.

“You can have a more defensive player on one side and another more creative one on the other.

“At Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez was the creator but he had a player like Sergio Busquets alongside him, or Yaya Toure, players who were more defensive than him and gave him that freedom we creative players need.

“I’m very comfortable because, when I play with Francis Coquelin, with Mohamed Elneny, with Xhaka, they help me a lot in that position.

“I’ve been lucky the boss has always had confidence in me. Now, I’ve played many games with Arsenal, it’s clear every year is more difficult.

“We have many players of a very high level and I think it’s a very good thing for the manager.”

Cazorla is currently out with an Achilles injury and Gooners are itching for him to recover and return back to full fitness. He has been crucial to our style of play in recent years and hopefully, he will continue to be.
