Oscar, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Jose Fonte and Dwight Gayle have been handed the honour of being in the running with Santi Cazorla for the PFA’s Fans’ Player of the Month for January.
The Little Arsenal magician scooped the award for December and is the favorite to be the first winner this year having played a huge role in Arsenal’s two Premier League victories this month. Media outlets have not ceased their praise of his exceptional display against Man City at the Etihad, helping the Gunners to beat the Champions with a goal and an assist.
The absence of Arsenal’s other creative players for much of this season has seen Santi favored in the Number 10 role and he has only got better with every game. though he has not matched his tally of four goals scored in December this month, it has become increasingly clear that he has grown more into the responsibility of providing the spark for Arsenal, so much so that German playmaker, Mesut Ozil, has been deemed as surplus in the eyes of some fans.
It won’t exactly be a walk over for him, though, as a few of his challengers this month had quite a good month on different levels.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane was the man of the match in their dismemberment of Chelsea, scoring twice and adding to his overall season tally to 18, a move which has seen him offered a new contract despite only just signing a deal last August. The 21-year old former Arsenal trainee has hit the lights as Mauricio Pochettino’s main striker this season as neither the soon-to-be-sold Soldado nor Adebayor have justified the over-the-top wages being wasted on them.
Saints’ captain, Jose Fonte, would likely be another threatening challenger with the Saints unbeaten in the League this year.
Wins over Arsenal and United, at Old Trafford, without conceding, would say much about the quality of Southampton’s defence and while his partners have frequently flickered due to injuries (Alderweireld) or International commitments (Yoshida), the Portuguese has stood firm in keeping the Saints’ defence tight and steadying their challenge on securing a top four spot.
Dwight Gayle was instrumental to Alan Pardew’s first win as Crystal Palace manager, helping the Eagles to a sensational comeback wins against Tottenham and Burnley, scoring in both games. he’s been touted for an England call-up by some and while that may yet be far-fetched, he has merited his inclusion in this list.
Raheem Sterling is Liverpool’s leading man nowadays while the highlight of Oscar’s month would be the brace scored at Swansea. He was brilliant and could even have got a hat-trick on the day but for Schurrle’s intrusion.
But none of these quite had the monumental impact in the Premier League this January as much as Cazorla did. Even Oscar would vote him, wouldn’t he? The title is closer to Chelsea now ‘cos of him.
