Sami Khedira could be Arsenal’s first signing in January.
Arsene Wengers plans to woo Sami Khedira to the Emirates in the coming January transfer window has hit a fresh impediment as reports suggest the midfielder is set to be nabbed from our grasp by our London rivals, Chelsea.
Khedira has been linked with a move to the Gunners all summer long and recent reports had given the indication that the World Cup winner would be one of Arsene Wenger’s expected signings in January. This move has hit a rock as Mourinho plots a 13th outsmarting over Arsene Wenger by making quite an enticing offer to Madrid. Out-of-favour goalkeeper Petr Cech has been placed on the table as an inducement for Khedira, an exchange which may see us lose out on the German International.
On the value market, Khedira is worth around £10m and as much as he is no longer fancied as much as Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge, to say that Petr Cech is worth less than £10m (even at 31) is quite a bold statement. By offering the Czech International, Mourinho’ll be giving Ancelotti an experienced goalie who will give more to the European Champions than the duo of Iker Casillas and new recruit Keylor Navas
Cech still has a lot to offer, as does Khedira, and the fact that both have been relegated to the fringes of their respective teams mean they are available to other interested parties. Khedira is in the last year of his current deal at the Bernabeu and while he may be willing to run down his deal, Madrid would be inclined to service some of their existing debt from any revenue they could recoup from any source possible. Without particular regard to the player’s choice of destination – which is not certain at the moment – there is the feeling that Madrid will sell to the party which favours them most – and this is where the Cech offer may prove a kncokout for Arsenal.
This, though, does not mean that it will all work out perfectly for Khedira moving to Chelsea, as their team is already quite stocked. With a midfield of Matic, Fabregas, Ramires and Mikel, Mourinho is hardly in need of another man to hold and control. Wenger, though, is in desperate need of a presence in midfield with injuries ravaging key players. The team has suffered for the lack of a strong player able to organise play from deep positions as well as keep the opposition hesitant about any plans to attack. It is in this sense that Khedira moving to Arsenal should make more sense to the player.
Mourinho may just be playing the spoiler for Wenger’s plans to knock him off the top of the table by January. It’s not done yet though.
It’s still on us to keep it in ‘Cech’
