Khedira’s long discussed move from Real Madrid to Arsenal has received a massive boost as the player is reportedly set to snub the advances of Jose Mourinho in favor of a switch to the Emirates.
The Daily Star relates that Wenger’s bid to land Khedira is being influenced positively by the two of his trusted allies, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil, Khedira’s World Cup teammates. The 27-year old who is being sought by Wenger to fit the defensive midfield role has been the subject of interest from other English clubs, including Manchester United who have run out of patience with AS Roma over Kevin Strootman.
Ed Woodward and his gang have reportedly initiated proceedings which will see them make an approach to Madrid for Khedira. However, it is the Gunners who are believed to be in pole position to land him having reached an agreement with his agents over personal terms, with a fee to be agreed with his club for the transfer to be completed in January.
In an ironic turn of events, Real boss, Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out the possibility of letting Khedira go this winter, stating that the club are still making efforts to persuade him to accept an extension. The manager stated this as the 10-time European Champions touched down in England for their blockbuster Champions League tie with Liverpool Tuesday evening, claiming he will only allow the German World Cup winner go in the summer.
“We have until June to reach an agreement with him” Ancelotti said to the London Evening Standard
“If he wants to sign an extension, the club will renew him. If not, he will leave the team at the end of the season”
This will come as a stunning surprise to both Arsenal and Chelsea, as the fact that Khedira’s contract runs out in the summer, with him not willing to accept any refusal to increase his wages thought to be the green light signaling his imminent exit in January.
Khedira’s been on the fringes of Carlo Ancelotti’s set-up this season, having been relegated in the pecking order behind the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Though a regular at the Bernabeu over the past four years, Khedira’s long-term injury which kept him out of much of the La Decima season has brought into question his fitness and long-term prospect in the team, hence prompting his replacement with the 24-year old Kroos in the summer. Khedira, though, is still only 27 and is determined to play more football and giving his qualities, you cannot bet against him putting in some more considerable years on the pitch.
Madrid could be made to see the goods in selling Khedira in the winter as there is no chance he will extend his Bernabeu stay, even if his wage demands are met. Modric and Kroos are in excellent form and there are not many players who could usurp either of them easily. Khedira will likely still be let go in winter.
Let’s hope it’s we who they do the German business with, once again.
