According to reports in talkSPORT, Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, is plotting to move ahead of his touchline rival, Arsene Wenger, to the signing of highly rated German youngster Antonio Rudiger.
Rudiger is said to be one of the very probable defensive options available to Arsene Wenger in the coming January window, as he is a self-proclaimed fan of the Gunners. Mourinho is believed to be exploring options with which he would strengthen his defence in January due to the apparent deficiency noticeable from John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kourt Zouma. The Blues are known to be very stiff in defence but with just 5 clean sheets in 15 games in all competitions, Mourinho is already looking to give more vibrancy to his rearguard.
It would prove difficult for Chelsea to twist the youngster’s mind from what is already a fixed gaze on a dream move to the Emirates. The 21 year old star who plays for Stuttgart in the BundesLiga has confessed his love for the Gunners. The Blues are believed to be on the verge of agreeing a #7m deal with Stuttgart for Rudiger but the player would rather move to the North, where his heart is.
“I have always dreamed of the Premier League” said Rudiger.
“I have been following Arsenal since the days of Henry and Bergkamp. I watch videos of Arsenal all the time on Youtube and I often wear the current Alexis Sanchez shirt”
“My heart beats for Arsenal”
This is will be the massive boost to Wenger as he searches for not just makeshift defensive options in January but true potential stars who would be both an addition and an improvement to what we already have. It will also be to the manager’s delight that Rudiger does not have a hefty price tag over his neck, which, in truth, his talents deserve.
Already a full International with Die Mannshaaft, Rudiger is very quickly gaining great reviews in Germany, even been tipped to be Mats Hummels defensive partner for Joachim Loew’s team in the Euros in two years time. Such is the immensity of his potential. He is a big, strong, lad, who has pace and technical skill to boot – attributes which make him tailor made for the Premier League.
Arsenal has been ravaged by injuries, which has resulted to Wenger resorting to the use of round pegs in square holes, Monreal’s nightmare against Anderlecht in central defence coming into perspective. The fact we only have two reliable center backs in Koscielny and Mertesacker, the third still fine tuning his game, means there is hardly any competition for places in the team, which is sure to brook complacency amongst the defenders.
Mertesacker, in particular, has appeared to be in need of this competition. Wenger may still excuse his lapses on account of the exertions of the World Cup, but that competition has long gone over 4 months ago. The now retired German player has yet to take up the mantle he wore last season which established his cult hero status amongst gooners. Koscielny’s injury absence may be the reason for this, but perhaps he still needs someone on the bench to keep him more on his feet.
Rudiger will be perfect fit for this mission, and he WILL be available in January.
Stuttgart do not have any European commitments this season, meaning he would slot in straight away in the Champions League. Also, the BundesLiga club have struggled so far this season, with relegation looming large even at so early a stage in the season. A part of the Dortmund youth set up for three years, Rudiger has been schooled in the kind of football which attracts and accomplishes, little wonder then he’s an Arsenal fan.
