Club captain Per Mertesacker appears to be closing in on a move to the Bundesliga.
There have been lot of talks on Mertesacker’s future in recent weeks. First Werder Bremen’s sporting director Frank Baumann claimed there is a possibility the defender would join them at the end of the season and the player also fueled those claims by refusing to commit his future to Arsenal in a recent interview.
Mertesacker’s contract expires at the end of the season and there are doubts over his future as Wenger wants him to return from the knee injury he sustained in pre season and prove his fitness before offering him a new deal.
His place in the starting xi is also at risk due to the blossoming partnership of Koscielny and Mustafi which could force him to settle for a place on the bench.
With all these happenings, it is only normal that the 32 year old is seriously considering his future and it appears he is already exploring the option of leaving the Emirates.
Werder Bremen’s captain has now confirmed that he held talks with our captain over a possible move to the German giants.
‘We have talked about a possible move,’ Bremen skipper Fritz told Bild.
‘Per would be a great addition to Werder – as a footballer and as a person. It would be a good thing for the club when Per would opt for Bremen.’
It’s not a good thing when a player start holding talks with individuals from other clubs about a possible move, first it was the club’s sporting director and now the club captain. It appears the defender’s time with us is drawing to an end and should he finally decide to leave, we hope for the best for him.
