Liverpool forward Sadio Mane could have been playing for Arsenal had club scout Gilles Grimandi not turn down the chance of signing the Senegalese international.
The winger now 24, started his career at French club Metz where he spent one season before he joined Red Bull Salzburg and the Express has now revealed that the player could have joined Arsenal instead of the Austrian side.
Mady Toure, the owner of the academy football club Mane started his career in Senegal said he contacted Grimandi about the forward but the scout turned the opportunity down, claiming he wasn’t good enough.
But Toure claims Grimandi told him, as quoted by the Express: “He replied that he was insufficient…like others.”
Mane is now a key player for title rivals Liverpool having impressed at Salzburg and Southampton. Arsenal were at the receiving end of the Senegalese quality when he scored a beauty in the 4-3 loss to Liverpool on the opening day of the season.
Indeed he was a missed opportunity but one can’t regret missing out on the winger. Who is to say he would have developed into the player he is today had he joined us in 2011?
Mane is arguably Liverpool’s best player this season and has scored 11 goals for Jurgen Klopp’s men prior to his departure to the African Cup of Nations tournament.
