Having opened talks with Lorient, Arsenal seems to have stolen the lead on league rivals Liverpool in a bid to secure the services of defender Raphael Guerreiro this summer.
The Portuguese international who starred at the European under 21 championship last summer carried his impressive showings into this season and has been in imperious form all season in French Ligue 1.
His displays have understandably attracted alot of interest from several clubs around Europe and with his current contract set to run out in 2017, Lorient are believed to be willing to cash in for a fee of around £6million.
According to TransferMarketWeb via the Daily Star Wenger is already holding ‘deeper and deeper talks’ with Lorient in a bid to strike a deal for Guerreiro. With current first choice left back Nacho Monreal already 30 and uncertainty surrounding the future of Kieran Gibbs, the gaffer’s interest in the player is understandable.
To sway him to the Emirates, Wenger would have to guarantee the 22-year-old playing time as Guerreiro has previously turned the advances of French Champions Paris Saint-Germain in favour of regular playing time.
“There were contacts between the presidents and with my agent last summer,” Guerreiro told Le Parisien.
“But I made it clear that it was not an option that interested me.
“For the good of my career, I figured that it would be better to have a complete season with Lorient rather than to be a substitute at PSG.
“Even if you do progress when you are in contact with great players, I gave playing time greater importance.”
