Monaco have rejected Arsenal’s £31m bid for Thomas Lemar, according to The Guardian.
Wenger had identified Lemar as a priority target to replace Alexis Sanchez who is reportedly set to leave the Emirates. The Monaco playmaker caught Wenger’s attention with his displays for his club last season and Arsene now wants him as part of his summer rebuilding project.
However, Wenger’s attempt to sign the winger has suffered a huge set back as Monaco turned down Arsenal’s first official offer.
The bid is reportedly worth £31m but Monaco who have lost Bernando Silva to Manchester City and also on theverge of losing Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea do not want to lose any other member of their title winning squad.
Lemar is reportedly keen on a move to the Emirates but wouldn’t force his exit from Monaco.
The French club have told Arsenal that Lemar would not be sold at any price and have now moved to secure his services by offering him a new contract.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will take a no for an answer or continue to push for a deal.
Gooners will be desperate for Wenger to complete the signing of Lemar despite Monaco’s reluctance to sell. His record of 14 goals and 17 assists across all competitions last season shows he will go a long way to fill Sanchez’s boots or better yet compliment the Chilean should he decide to stay.
