As long as it goes with our transfer targets for this window, another day has bitten the dust as Bayern Munich forward, Xherdan Shaqiri, has sealed a move to Serie A side, Inter Milan according to Express.
Shaqiri’s potential exit from the Allianz Arena has been on the cards for long and the recent statements of key figures at Munich have even expressed their disappointments at the circumstance. We were one of a couple of Premier League clubs who had been rumoured to be connected with an interest in bringing the 23-year old to England but it appears both parties came to an agreement that seemed beyond us.
Roberto Mancini has barely been three months into his second stint as Inter manager but he is already racking up the stakes at the San Siro with some deals of interest, Shaqiri is their second loan acquisition of the season in addition with our very own Lukas Podolski. More interesting with the Swiss is the fact that they have the option to sign him permanently in June for £21m, having to pay £2m for his services for the next 6 months.
A star of Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side at the World Cup in Brazil, Shaqiri’s physique and power would have made him a good fit for the Premier League as his ability to hold off challenges from defenders while being a very fiery prospect for goalkeepers with his usually accurate shots. What a huge compliment his energy to the vivacity of current Arsenal man of the moment, Alexis Sanchez.
However, for all the rumours linking us to him, there never really looked like there was a show of intent from our part. For all we know, Wenger is majorly focused on defensive targets this January, with a slight chance of a defensive midfielder coming in. There are a lot of options currently available to us at the moment which should be good enough to keep us in the challenges that lie ahead and it probably would not have made utmost sense to farm out Podolski and get Shaqiri. Young and powerful, yes, but where’d he have played now?
Perhaps those who feel more aggrieved would be Liverpool as they seemed to have put more into the pursuit for the Yugoslav-born forward. Brendan Rodgers had reportedly been keen on him and it will feel like yet another snub from a player, perhaps Milan has more glamorous sceneries than good ol’Merseyside.
So that’s one name slashed now. And there are still a lot on the list who may continue to be deleted as the first week of the window zips away.
